MUSLIM SLAUGHTERMEN

AUS-MEAT Limited is an industry owned company operating as a joint venture between Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) and the Australian Meat Processor Corporation (AMPC). AUS-MEAT runs efficient, disciplined business practices operating under internationally recognised Quality Management Systems: ISO 9001: 2000.

Australian Government Halal Slaughter Program (AGHS)

The Australian Government Halal Slaughter program (AGHS) provides for maintenance of Halal status and segregation of product after carcases are declared Halal by Muslim Slaughtermen. AQIS is responsible for the approval of all AGHS programs and monitors all aspects of the program on a daily basis. This includes security and issue of Halal stamps and signing of Certification.

Approved Arrangement

All Establishments wishing to produce Halal meat must include a detailed Halal program in their Approved Arrangement to ensure Halal product is prepared, handled, packed, and stored in a manner that addresses Halal integrity at all stages of production. The Approved Arrangement will also cover specific Importing country requirements e.g Malaysia, Saudi Arabia to ensure compliance with any specific Halal requirements. Approved Islamic Organisations are also subject to complying with the requirements of the AGHS. There is joint responsibility between Meat processors, Islamic Organisations, AQIS and AUS-MEAT to ensure Halal integrity when preparing, identifying, storing and certifying Halal Meat / Meat products for both Export and Domestic consumption.

Muslim Slaughtermen Registration

Muslim slaughtermen (including Trainees) and authorised Halal inspectors must hold a current identity card which will identify the Recognised Islamic Organisation who has registered the representative and declared the status of the card holder and the card's expiration date. AUS-MEAT issues all Identity cards with the period of registration being 1 January - 31 December of each Calendar year. A fee is charged for processing the Identity card.

Halal Inspector Registration

Halal Inspectors must also hold a current identity card under the same conditions as Muslim Slaughtermen. Halal Inspectors are usually required at Boning rooms, Cold stores or further processing operations and will also work within the guidelines of the Approved Arrangement and the AGHS. Halal Inspectors who have transitory roles within a Metropolitan area must have their Identity card present at all times they are working within an Approved Arrangement.

Trainee Slaughtermen Registration

Trainee Slaughtermen must also hold a current identity card under the same conditions as Muslim Slaughtermen. Trainee Slaughtermen will work within the Company's Training program and will be under close supervision of a Competent Muslim Slaughterman. There is joint responsibility between Meat processors and Islamic Organisations for developing an effective Training program for Muslim Slaughtermen and the progression to competency. Once competent the Islamic Organisation will notify AUS-MEAT and request a Muslim Slaughtermen card to be issued.
